SUMMARY:2026 Annual Citrus Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Citrus Tasting is on Sunday\, March 29th  from 3-6 PM at the Live Oak Grange. Admission is $5 or free if you volunteer or donate fruit. \nWe’re thrilled to have Daniel Paduano from Abounding Harvest Mountain Farm and Clark Magruder\, local citrus expert\, joining us! They’ll be sharing their favorite citrus varieties along with some expert tips — and then we’ll all get to taste a wide range of delicious citrus fruits that grow well in our region. \nThese events are such a blast\, and they really come together thanks to the magic of our community.  You can check out the volunteer and donation list to see where you can pitch in.  If you have some citrus themed goodies for snacking\, that would be great too!  Please label them with ingredients for those who have allergies. \nVolunteers: \nSignup to volunteer here. We need fruit cutters before the event\, help cleaning up (citrus gets pretty sticky!).  And other jobs\, like parking lot monitor.  You’ll get in free\, and be put on our VIP list\, which will earn you a few perks throughout the year.  Besides\, just getting to hang with other fruit nerds! \nCitrus Donation: \nIt is always super interesting to taste fruits from different growing regions so we can compare how the same variety tastes in different microclimates\, so don’t be shy–add your fruit to the mix\, even if you see someone is already bringing it.  Add your variety and any notes to the list here.   Please ensure there is NO PLANT MATERIAL on the fruit.  Not even a leaf.  This is due to the Asian Citrus Psyllid quarantine. \nRegister: \nWe’re asking everyone to pre-register for the event (volunteering or not) so we can get an idea of how much fruit we’ll need. You can register and access the volunteer/donation sign up here: Registration \nWe’ll have tasting notes ready so you can jot down your favorites\, and we’re planning a group budwood order from CCPP for citrus scionwood (list of budwood)— all in preparation for our Citrus Grafting Event on Saturday April 18th (woohoo! 🍊✂️). \nMore details about the Citrus Grafting event and other upcoming events soon…

SUMMARY:David Karp Is Coming To Town!
DESCRIPTION:The Fruit Detective presents “Elements of Flavor”\, an analysis of deliciousness itself…\n\nHe’s been called a national treasure in the world of pomology\, and David Karp has certainly made himself known. As the “Fruit Detective”\, he’s written for the New York Times\, the L.A. Times\, Gourmet Magazine\, The Smithsonian\, Sunset\, etc.\, specializing in long form\, deep diving discussions of a fruit variety or issue he’s passionate about. \nHe’s worked for years in various research functions for the U.C. Riverside Citrus Germplasm collection\, and helped co-found the citrus germplasm collection in Kunming\, China. \nBeyond fruit writing\, photography\, research and nomenclature\, he’s gotten his hands dirty in the “Bunyard Orchard” collaboration with Andy Mariani\, where he grows and distributes coveted yet neglected varieties of European plums. Near-riot conditions regularly erupt among his Santa Monica Farmers Market customers when the fruit supply fails to satiate the restless throngs. \nWell\, lucky for us\, David is coming to town\, and will be engaging the MBCRFG in his inimical fashion\, presenting on the elements of flavor\, unpacking the Yumm\, celebrating the acid\, aromatics\, astringency and bitters that combine with the sugar to lend character and memorability to the flavor of fruit. \nA small fruit tasting will follow the discussion\, to materalize the concepts covered in the talk. \nSunday\, October 5th\, 10-12:00 at the German American hall in Santa Cruz \nA Zeffy registration will be set up in the next few days\, so keep that Sunday open and get ready to grab a spot!

SUMMARY:🍊🍋 Citrus Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Hi Fruit Friends! 🍊🍋 \nWe’ve got some juicy things in the works and I’m excited to share them with you! First up — mark your calendars for our Annual Citrus Tasting on Sunday\, April 6th from 2:30–5:30 PM at the Live Oak Grange. Admission is $5 or free if you volunteer or donate fruit. \nWe’re thrilled to have Zea Sonnabend from Fruitilicious Farm joining us! She’ll be sharing her favorite citrus varieties along with some expert tips — and then we’ll all get to taste a wide range of delicious citrus fruits that grow well in our region. \nThese events are such a blast\, and they really come together thanks to the magic of our community. We’d love your help! You can check out the volunteer and donation list below to see where you can pitch in. It would be so fun to have fruits from different growing regions so we can compare how the same variety tastes in different microclimates\, so don’t be shy–add your fruit to the mix. \nWe’re asking everyone to pre-register for the event (volunteering or not) so we can get an idea of how much fruit we’ll need. \nYou can register and access the volunteer/donation sign up here: https://www.zeffy.com/ticketing/2025-citrus-tasting \nWe’ll have tasting notes ready so you can jot down your favorites\, and we’re planning a group budwood order from the CCPP for citrus scionwood — all in preparation for our Citrus Grafting Event\, which will take place on May 18th (woohoo! 🍊✂️).

SUMMARY:Pear Spectacular November 3!
DESCRIPTION:Ready for a pear-fectly spectacular pear gathering? We’ve got something exciting for you. Join your fellow MBCRFG members on Sunday\, November 3rd to hear C. Todd Kennedy speak about fall’s wonderful fruit – PEARS! To be followed by a Pear Tasting and one of our wonderful potlucks! (See registration link below.) \n \n  \n  \nIf you haven’t already heard about Mr. Kennedy\, he has been a fruit adventurer extraordinaire for years\, and is responsible for bringing hundreds of varieties of fruit to America and sharing them with the USDA repositories. He is reputed to have brought to America about half of the country’s stone fruit collection. And also those Italian figs with numbers (instead of names) that you see at the scion exchange? Yep\, you guessed it\, Mr. Kennedy brought those here too. He also established The Arboreum Company and grew and distributed fruit trees through that company\, all while maintaining a busy career as an agricultural attorney working with farmers on labor and land use issues. He’s going to share with us his lifetime of knowledge about growing and selecting exquisite pear varieties. \nOur members Freddy Menge\, Lizzie Gray and Zea Sonnabend  will be bringing a selection of pears for our tasting. And YOU\, our wonderful members\, are asked to contribute a dish for our potluck. In addition to a dish (and serving tool)\, please make sure to bring your own plate\, utensils\, napkin\, etc. to make it light lifting for us all. Please bring organic food whenever possible. We also welcome you to bring any fruit you’d like to share that you’re harvesting now. It’s so joyful to share the fruits of our labor with each other. \nThe afternoon’s fun will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until 6:00 (or until the food is all eaten!). Volunteers wishing to help with set-up can arrive at 2:30\, or stay after 6:00 to tuck everything in and sweep up. \nThis is a members-only event. Has your membership expired? No worries\, you can renew your membership here. \nRegister here for this free event. \n

SUMMARY:2023 Citrus Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Tasting 62 varieties of Santa Cruz grown citrus with the Monterey Bay chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers.\n  \nJoin fellow members of the Monterey Bay CRFG for our Citrus Tasting. Typically an annual event\, pandemic excepted\, we celebrate the pending arrival of spring by tasting glowing orbs harvested from all around our area. \nThis event will be held March 19 at the Santa Cruz Grange Hall\, 1900 17th Ave in Santa Cruz. We will begin setup at 2 p.m. and tasting at 2:30. This is a members-only event. We hope that most of the fruit for the event will be donated from our members’ gardens. \nThe amount of fruit donated should be what will fit into a paper lunch bag\, more or less.  Perhaps more if it is larger fruit like grapefruit\, and less if it is …. smaller fruit. 😀  Please bring your donation to the fruit tasting as close to 2 p.m. as possible. Also\, please bring your water bottle to help cleanse your palate between major types of fruit. \nContact Us with any questions!

SUMMARY:2022 Holiday Party and Election
DESCRIPTION:The MB CRFG’s annual holiday party will be held December 17\, starting at 3 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Grange Hall.  We’ll have our potluck\, so think about what lovely creation you’d like to share. We will also have a slideshow of everyone’s experiences this year. The photo deadline is December 10 to allow time to compile the slide show. \nAlso\, we will be holding the election for next year’s board of directors. In the past\, we have had folks self-nominate – write a note describing yourself and your interest in serving on the board. Experience is not required\, but Enthusiasm is needed to help run the group and provide great experiences throughout the year.  We have several great events already in the formation stage\, and look forward to help in making these events come to life (including our Fruit-a-Palooza next spring!). \nLooking forward to seeing everyone at the party!
