DESCRIPTION:DUE TO A SHIPPING ERROR\, OUR GRAFTING WORKSHOP HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED TO FEBRUARY 24 FROM 1-4 P.M. \nReady to learn how to graft? Or is it just time to really “up” your grafting game? Join us for our hands-on grafting class\, RESCHEDULED to Saturday\,  February 24\, at the Santa Cruz Live Oak Grange\, 1900 17th Avenue in Santa Cruz\, from 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free for Monterey Bay CRFG members who volunteer to help at the event\, and $25 for members of the general public and for non-volunteering members. Class is limited to 50 participants. \nAdmission includes the class\, a potted Geneva 890 apple rootstock\, and your choice from a selection of choice apple scions. Bring a plastic bag for any rootstock you hope to purchase. \nWe distill\, demonstrate and explain for you an easy and efficient grafting technique\, then guide all attendees through a practice period performing cuts on sample twigs to develop a feel for the technique. After that\, you will select a scion to graft onto your rootstock\, to create your own tree. The experienced mentors on hand will help coach and direct you. This streamlined method is applicable for all types of fruit tree grafting. \nIf you have a grafting knife\, please bring it to the event. \nChapter members are encouraged to volunteer for this event. We need: \nSetup begins at 12:30 p.m.: open tables\, set out chairs\, layout materials \nClean-up: after the class (lots of sweeping up so we leave the Grange as immaculate as we find it). \n

SUMMARY:2024 Scion Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the 2024 Scion Exchange\, to be held January 27\, 2024. Hundreds of scions will be available for dormant varieties of fruit (apples\, stone fruit and more)\, along with rootable cuttings of other fruits! \n \nWhat Scions will be Available?\nAs scions are collected from around the Northern California Chapters\, the names will be entered into our online Scion Database. The database lists what will be offered\, and is continuously updated until the day of the exchange (so keep checking back for what’s new!). Consulting the list in advance will give you a chance to research varieties you are interested in. \nOur scion exchange is enhanced by contributions from everyone who has interesting varieties to share!  Please check these guidelines on how to prepare your scions for sharing\, and how to add them to the database. \nAdmission Times as Follows:\n\n12 noon: general public and non-volunteering CRFG members. We encourage everyone to purchase admission in advance at our Zeffy ticketing website.\n11 a.m.: volunteers who came early to set up — details will be emailed to chapter members. Member volunteers do not need to pay admission.\nCRFG members who are bringing scions or other plant material to share\, please come no later than 10:30 with your contributions so they can be placed correctly in the exchange.  If your scions need cutting\, please come at 10 a.m. and bring your clippers! Also\, make sure to send your scion info (per the guidelines linked above) to the scion database so others can research the offerings.\n\n \nActivities will include our usual: good fellowship with other fruit enthusiasts\, hundreds of scions to pick from\, rootstock sales\, custom grafting and a grafting demonstration. \nApple\, pear\, krymsk (for stone fruit)\, and hopefully quince and plum rootstock will be available for $7 each or 5 for $30. Bring a plastic bag for any rootstock you hope to purchase. \nNew Activity:  Garden Exchange\nThis year\, we are adding a garden exchange to the scion exchange! We are encouraging people to bring garden-related items\, in good\, usable condition\, that you no longer use but perhaps someone else might. \nThis could include pots\, tools\, seedling trays\, irrigation parts\, gardening books\, plant cuttings\, viable seeds or bulbs\, soil amendments\, fertilizers\, pest control material\, etc… \nIf bringing any pest or disease control materials\, they must be in the original containers with the original labels in good readable condition. \nOut of an abundance of caution\, no citrus plants or cuttings will be allowed. \nLocation\nThis year’s location is Soquel High School\, 401 Soquel San Jose Rd\, Soquel\, CA 95073. The exchange is held in the main quad area. \nBring These Items to the Event\n1. Ziploc bags to store your scions and to keep them fresh (label the bag with your name so it doesn’t get lost if you set it down)\n2. Large plastic bags if you plan on purchasing rootstocks (to keep the roots damp)\n3. Masking/Painters tape to label the scions you select\n4. Sharpie\, fine point\, to write on the masking tape to label your scions

DESCRIPTION:The MB CRFG’s annual holiday party will be held December 17\, starting at 3 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Grange Hall.  We’ll have our potluck\, so think about what lovely creation you’d like to share. SUMMARY:Grafting Knife Sharpening Workshop and Feijoa Tasting
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to start preparing for spring\, isn’t it? Well\, maybe that’s a bit premature\, but in the meantime we will be holding a workshop November 12 to learn how to sharpen our grafting knives. This will be a hands-on workshop\, the purpose of which is to enable all who are interested (not just knife geeks!) to learn principles and practices of knife sharpening and to have a properly sharpened grafting knife blade as we head toward the scion exchange and spring grafting. The skills we learn will also be transferable to kitchen knives\, helping all attendees to be more self-sufficient with knife maintenance. \nOur workshop leader will be Andy Wilson\, who many of you know as a member of our group. \nWorkshop Details: \nNovember 12\, 2022 – Outdoor Event \nLocation: Santa Cruz Grange\, 1900 17th Ave in Santa Cruz \nTime: 2:30 p.m. \nBring: Your grafting knife \nMaterials Needed:\nYou will need to bring your own grafting stone(s) for this class – this will enable everyone to be hands-on as well as ensure you can continue to keep your grafting knife sharp for years to come. Recommended stones (you are only required to have one of these): \n\nDiamond stones\, which are generally for dry sharpening\, and can be used at home or in the field. Also good for kitchen knives. Here are two links from Amazon for this type:\nhttps://www.rockler.com/diamond-hone-sharpening-set?country=US&sid=V91046&promo=shopping  about ~$16.Or alternatively https://www.amazon.com/DMT-W7EFC-Diamond-Whetstone-Stone/dp/B00004WFTD/ref=psdc_328182011_t2_B000UVS62S\, which is a bit more expensive ~$24\nFor folks who would like to use oil stones\, which could be useful for other sharpening purposes as well as the grafting knives:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006NDPLW/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&%2AVersion%2A=1&%2Aentries%2A=0\, ~$28\n\n  \nIf you feel your knife is really dull\, an additional stone might be useful\, such as: <https://www.amazon.com/Norton-Crystolon-Combination-Oilstone-Coarse/dp/B0001MSA5Y/>. ~$34.  This is a “nice to have” but is not “required” for the workshop. \nAt the conclusion of the knife sharpening workshop\, we will have a feijoa tasting. These can be grown in our area; for more details check out the CRFG Fruit Facts.  Among the varieties we will be tasting are some from Mark Albert’s collection.

SUMMARY:Cider Making Presentation Featuring Jim Rider
DESCRIPTION:Jim Rider will be giving a presentation on September 28 via Zoom on the mysteries of making cider! \nUpdate: the recording of this presentation is published here. \n\nJim Rider is a power hitter in the local fruit world and beyond. A 5th generation Pajaro Valley apple grower with a master’s degree in Pomology from Cornell\, for decades he’s been a local leader as an innovative and influential organic orchardist\, a pioneering red-fleshed apple breeder\, and longtime MBCRFG member. He’s also a mainstay provisioner of apple and pear wood for our annual scion exchange and major contributor of unique varieties for our yearly apple tasting. \nJim has taken a serious interest in cider making over the last decade\, and when Jim Rider puts his mind to something\, it comes out good. It’s truly regrettable the group won’t be able to taste any of his fine\, dry\, delicious production\, but Jim will be gracing our chapter with a zoom presentation to discuss the ins and outs of fermenting our own. \nHe will tailor his talk to the backyard fruit grower wishing to make cider from their own fruit. All aspects of the process will be covered\, from handling of the fruit\, selection and suitability of apple varieties\, yeast strains\, juice handling\, fermentation management\, barreling\, fining\, bottling\, sanitation\, carbonation\, storage… \nThere will be a discussion period after the talk where Jim will take any questions that may arise. \nMeeting Details\nMonterey Bay CRFG is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Jim Rider: Making Cider! \nTime: Sep 28\, 2021 07:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/83220885691?pwd=c1YrclZRRHUyaTJDZTc5YUIxaEtFZz09 \n  \nMeeting ID: 832 2088 5691 \nPasscode: 136634 \nOne tap mobile \n+16699006833\,\,83220885691#\,\,\,\,*136634# US (San Jose) \n+12532158782\,\,83220885691#\,\,\,\,*136634# US (Tacoma) \n  \nDial by your location \n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) \n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) \n+1 929 436 2866 US (New York) \n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) \n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \nMeeting ID: 832 2088 5691 \nPasscode: 136634 \nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcJZiNZQM4

SUMMARY:March Meeting: Avian Pest Control / Elderberries
DESCRIPTION:We have two terrific speakers planned for the evening. \n\nFirst\, Jo Ann Baumgartner from the Wild Farm Alliance will speak to us regarding AVIAN PEST CONTROL – encouraging birds to inhabit our spaces to control pest insects\, rodents and pest birds. This should be a great presentation – and we will follow her talk with a Q&A session.\nSecond\, Katie Reneker from Carmel Berry Company will discuss ELDERBERRIES!  Many of us have expressed interest in elderberries\, and Katie is just the person to talk to us about them.  She has taken an interest grown from improving her family’s health and developed it into a business that provides elderberry products in many forms. She will chat with us about elderberries and their culture.\n\nThe link for the Zoom meeting will be emailed to chapter members on Sunday before the meeting.
