SUMMARY:Subtropicals and Tropicals in California Agroecosystems
DESCRIPTION:“Subtropicals and Tropicals in California Agroecosystems”\nPresentation by Barath Raghavan\, followed by Q&A\nA meeting of the Monterey Bay\, California Rare Fruit Growers. \nRemote video-seminar via Zoom. Attendance limited. Priority admission to members of MBCRFG (join)\, and additional seats will be made available to non-members who pre-register here. \n\n“In this talk I’ll discuss 100+ edible subtropical and tropical species and some (ongoing) experiences growing them outdoors in various microclimates in Northern and Southern California\, both in the ground and in containers. I’ll share some opinions on which seem promising and which seem not to be worth the effort\, and I’ll discuss methods of propagation and care. I’ll also talk about how to select which species are appropriate for your specific microclimate\, and some research I’m doing into building computational tools to help automate this selection process.” \nBarath Raghavan\, Phd\, has been a long time participant in northern California CRFG circles\, where he was responsible for diverse propagation activity and the Ohlone Greenway fruit planting in Albany. More recently he has relocated to the Los Angeles area\, where he is on the computer science faculty at the University of Southern California.

SUMMARY:Tour of Pacific Berry Breeding & Member Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Update: Photos and write-ups are available of our tour of Pacific Berry Breeding and tour of Ken’s avocado homestead farm. \nThis is a member event for the Monterey Bay chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers. Please contact us if you are not yet a member and would like to attend. \nEstablished in 2003\, Pacific Berry Breeding (PBB) was created to develop proprietary raspberry cultivars for the fresh market on behalf of its owner-partners\, Salinas-based Naturipe Berry Growers and Santiago\, Chile-based Hortifrut SA. Since 2007\, PBB has been an official test site for advanced selections from the University of Arkansas blackberry breeding program. In 2013\, PBB began breeding proprietary blackberries\, with a focus on primocane-fruiting thornless types. Breeder Ellen Thompson will host a tour of of the caneberry variety development process. \nFollowing the tour we will reconvene for lunch at a chapter member’s nearby orchard homestead.

SUMMARY:Greenwood Scion and Plant Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our summertime greenwood exchange and fruit tasting!  Spring and summer is the preferred time to graft and propagate many tropical/subtropical species\, and to bud graft many of your deciduous fruit trees.  Please bring propagable scionwood of any varieties you would like to share with the chapter\, and feel free to also share any surplus of garden seedlings you’d like to unload from your potting bench.  To add to the fun\, we’ll be tasting and awarding prizes to the sweetest of the early summer fruit\, details below. \nFrom our mailing list: \nBring green wood cuttings\, leaves trimmed off\, in a labeled zip lock bag. The wood should be of about a pencil diameter\, or bigger. The label should include: fruit type\, variety\, any notes about the plant (e\,g. where it was grown\, flavor…). Types of cuttings are (but not limited to): avocado\, stone fruit\, sapote\, cherimoya\, feijoa\, apple\, pear\, pawpaw\, etc. The chapter will not be providing scion wood\, so the only wood that will be available for exchange will be the wood that we as a group bring to the exchange. remember to bring zip lock bags and labels for the things you want to take home! \nPlease do not bring diseased wood! \nDo not bring citrus cuttings. Citrus greening disease is a problem we should all be concerned with\, and we should not be moving citrus wood around. \nUse this forum as a way to request specific items. For example\, I would love to graft some more cherimoya varieties onto my tree\, so if you have something besides White and Fino de Jete\, I would love it if you shared scion wood with me. \nIn addition to scion material and plants\, bring fruit to share. We will have plates available to set your fruit on and markers to label it. We will also have a Brix meter and will be offering prizes for the three sweetest fruit that have been grown by chapter members. I’m hoping that one of my white sapotes will be ripe on the 30th! \nFreddy Menge and Aaron Bleadon will be demonstrating green wood grafting throughout the event. \nWe hope to see you there.
