TOUR OF JIM RIDER’S APPLE ORCHARD
September 8 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
We’re calling this tour: Everything you wanted to know about apple breeding but were afraid to ask.
Jim Rider, world class pomologist, 5th generation apple farmer in the Pajaro Valley, pioneering organic apple grower, internationally recognized red-fleshed apple breeder, founding local CRFG chapter member, generous and kind person, has offered our members a tour of his grounds and a presentation about his apple breeding operation.
We will meet at his Thompson Road orchard from 1-4 pm Sunday, September 8, and walk around his growing grounds, hear about his process, and see eye-popping examples of his ultra-high-density orcharding practices. We will taste an array of unreleased experimental apple varieties, while Jim talks about how they came to be.
We’d also love to celebrate all varieties of fruits and veggies that are ripening in our area right now, so please bring any fruit, veggies, or goodies you’d like to share. We will have tables for our community pot-luck. Please bring your own re-usable plates, cups and eating utensils.
Plenty of opportunity to mingle and marvel together.
This will be a provocative event, sure to arouse shock, curiosity and consternation. Jim is a master of the question-and-answer forum and has vowed to allow ample time to field all questions.
Jim said the sun is pretty bright in the orchard, so please dress accordingly and bring a chair if you’d like some seating. We hope to see you there! Registration is limited to 50 and for current MBCRFG members only. Register here
